Bob Culbertson in Hiroshima

Bob Culbertson will be coming to Hiroshima in November. Bob has been playing the Chapman Stick since 1976, almost as long as Emmett Chapman himself, and is one of the premier Stick players in the world. He will be visiting Hiroshima for a combined concert and Stick seminar event on 12 and 13 November. Both the concert and seminar will be held at Kapone.

The Stick seminar will be held on both Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm, with a break for lunch. Bob is a very experienced instructor, having taught several hundred students over many years, and will cover a variety of techniques and theory for a broad range of students, from beginner to advanced. Anyone who is interested in learning the Chapman Method for tapping on stringed instruments is welcome to attend. Previous experience with the Chapman Stick is not required. Guitarists, bassists, and other musicians are welcome to participate.

Concerts will be held on both nights after the seminar classes are complete. Saturday night will be Bob’s solo concert. I’ve seen Bob perform once before in Tokyo a few years ago, and his technique and passion are nothing short of amazing. He plays a wide range of originals and standards, covering all genres from rock to jazz and classical. (Emmett Chapman called him the “Segovia of the Stick”.)

Sunday night will be an open mic night for any and all musicians to perform on stage, with a block of time set aside for participants in the Stick seminar to take the stage and apply to their performances everything that they have learned over the past two days. Plus, there should be many opportunities for Stick players and other musicians to jam together and create new music.

The details for this eventful weekend are still being worked out, and I will be posting final information regarding concert ticket prices and seminar fees within the next few days. If you have any questions, want more information, or would like to buy a concert ticket or reserve a spot for the seminar, please send me an email.
